[ Video below ] Last Saturday, November 30th, I went with a few friends to the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! in Philadelphia for a demonstration day. Some of you might already know that the Simeone museum is full of famous race cars. Famous race cars that run.
The museum hosts demonstration days a number of times every year and this one happened to be a Peoples' Choice sort of deal where voters chose which cars would be fired up. The results were as follows: 1970 Porsche 917, 1966 Ford GT40 Mk II, 1964 Cobra Daytona Coupe and 1963 Corvette Grand Sport . Not a bad lineup, right?
Dr. Simeone was there to give a bit of background on each car, and as he finished speaking about one car it was started up and driven outside to a three-acre demonstration area. Basically, it's a parking lot where the cars can do some low speed laps in front of the crowd. Unfortunately, I think first gear in the 917 probably tops out a speed that would be above the limit for any highway in Pennsylvania, so you don't really get to hear the cars scream as they would on track. But, hey, I'll take any opportunity I can get to see a racing icon tool around a parking lot.
I was standing back by the 917 and I really couldn't get videos of the Shelby or the Grand Sport (I also missed them outside because I was trying to find a good spot to see over the crowd) but suffice it to say that the Vette was loud as hell. Just awesome, really. The stills were all I got of those two.
I was much more fortunate with the GT40 and the 917, however. Check out the vids!

I've also seen the GT and Gran Sport run there, but I am SOOOOO jealous you got to see the 917

Honestly the 917 was the main reason I went. It was unbelievable.
